The mini-gamelan was made upon the request of Elsje Plantema. She made the original designs, and Suhirdjan amended them as needed during production.

The case of each instrument is also a box, which may be closed and stacked in between sessions. The mallet for many of the instruments is also stored in the case with the keys. The keys of the saron family are removed and also placed inside the box.

Row 1: full gamelan (blue cases only), saron family, jengglong
Row 2: bonang barung and bonang panerus, kempul, kenong
